Dambulla Cave Temple

Dambulla is situated in central of Sri Lanka and It is 148 km far from current capital of Colombo.it is a rock that 160 m tall and it is in plain area. There 5 caves in this rock . There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area.


These caves have 153 Buddha statues ,3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 statues of God and Goddess.There are about 2100 square meters of murals in these caves. There are people lived before the Buddhist came. And for the evidence they can find the  Skeleton about 2700 years old in this area.



 This is a magnificent cave temple of all south Asia.These caves made from naturally and all the five caves in under a vast rock. Further there are a special creation for the manage the water, because in the rainy days the water can came to the inside  of the caves.

 And there is a another creation for the collect water to a special tank, and the water supply is coming through the rock and the water collection will never empty

This place was made by king Valagamba for his own safety. For the thankful gift he made  this into a Temple.
After that king Nissankamalla  gilded the caves and added about 70 Buddha statues.
